Broombusters is a volunteer society that started in Oceanside. Our mission is to empower communities to stop the spread of Scotch broom, an aggressive alien invasive plant taking over huge areas of the Pacific Northwest - especially on Vancouver Island. Come learn how to get rid of broom on your property and in your community. Broombusters now has groups from Duncan to Powell River.
Scotch broom is fast growing, toxic to animals and highly flammable. As it moves into clear-cut areas, it prevents forest regrowth. Help protect tomorrow's farmland, green spaces and forests! Come ask questions. We can help you. You can help your community!

I forage the woods of Vancouver Island for wild mushrooms, which I then dehydrate and jar – no plastic bags here folks! My foraged mushrooms include chanterelles, hedgehogs, lobsters, pines, cauliflower and turkey tail. I also cultivate lion’s mane, pink, yellow and blue oysters and reishi. I sell these separately, many in both regular and large sizes, and as well I make a mixed mushroom medley, for the best mushroom soup ever.

My son gathers chaga for me from the Prince George area and with it I make a couple of tea products, including ground – tea ball-ready chaga and what I call Super T Plus, which is a combination of ground chaga, turkey tail and lion’s mane mushroom.

Participant's Focus: 6. Groups-Clubs-Associations, 7. Education or Information
Shoots with Roots began in 2003, as an intergenerational gardening program where local school-aged children learned side by side with volunteer garden mentors in our Children's Food Garden.
The program has since expanded to include explorations of our local Douglas-fir forest, adventures in the Artist's Garden, and a wide variety of hands-on learning activities throughout Milner Gardens & Woodland.

The Good Earth Co. produces biochar as an organic soil amendment. Biochar is a specialized form of charcoal, crushed and charged with organic nutrients and beneficial soil microbes. Biochar increases soil fertility, moisture holding capacity and the biodiversity of the soil. It is also an excellent way to sequester atmospheric CO2, to generate renewable energy and to make excellent use of organic waste materials. Our locally made biochar is an excellent amendment for seeding mixes, for planting with trees and for use in garden beds. The Good Earth is an initiative of The Urban Farmer, a BC business promoting sustainable agriculture and permaculture throughout Western Canada and internationally.
